Seven rallies were held in Melbourne’s CBD over November and December 2017 to protest the Australian government’s inhumane treatment of refugees on Manus Island. Protests grew rapidly more urgent and intense following the government decision to close the “Manus Regional Processing Centre” and withdraw all support and services, effectively stranding over 600 men without water, electricity, food and medication. UNHCR urged the Australian government to stop an unfolding humanitarian emergency, while refugees spent their fifth consecutive Christmas in detention. The Australian government is still imprisoning refugees on Manus Island to this day.
