Seven rallies were held in Melbourne’s CBD over November and December 2017 protesting the Australian government’s inhumane treatment of refugees on Manus Island, following the closure of its “Regional Processing Centre” and withdrawal of all support and services. This decision effectively stranded over 600 men without water, electricity, food and medication. UNHCR urged the Australian government to stop an unfolding humanitarian emergency, while refugees spent their fifth consecutive Christmas in detention.
